Some adventures begin with a carefully planned itinerary. This one began with a birthday gift.

To celebrate Joey's 40th birthday, Joey and Rachel returned to South Africa, a destination that had captured their hearts during a previous hunt four years earlier. They couldn't wait to experience it again, reconnect with old friends, and create new memories in a place that had become much more than a hunting destination.

Unlike many trips, Joey arrived without a specific list of animals he hoped to pursue. Rachel had her sights set on an eland and a nyala, but after three days of searching, professional hunter Faunie explained why eland are considered one of the most elusive animals in the region. Accepting the challenge, Rachel encouraged Joey to take the opportunity if one presented itself. The search continued until the day before they were scheduled to leave. After days of patience, persistence, and countless miles in the field, they finally found the elusive eland. The successful hunt became one of the highlights of the trip, not simply because of the animal itself, but because of the unforgettable journey it took to get there.

Yet the moment they treasure most happened long before the hunt. When they arrived at camp, professional hunter Faunie had no idea they were returning. As he rounded the corner after a day in the field, he immediately recognized them from their visit four years earlier. His genuine surprise and warm welcome reminded them that the relationships built through hunting often last far longer than the adventure itself.
