Hunting Heritage

For Betty and Wally Allison, a trip to the lake has never been just about fishing, it's about family, tradition, and creating memories that last a lifetime. Each visit begins with the simple joys they cherish most: watching the sunrise over the water, listening to the haunting call of the loons, spending time together in the family cabin, and casting a line until the sun slips below the horizon.

Like any great fishing adventure, not every cast goes according to plan. Snagged lines, tangled lures, and missed opportunities are all part of the experience. Of course, there have been unforgettable catches along the way. Wally landed an impressive 48-inch musky in 2001, followed by Betty's own 45-inch musky in 2004. Yet the fish they remember most may be the one that got away—the biggest musky either had ever seen, with its head already in the net before it slipped free. Even today, it's a story that continues to be told around the cabin.

The greatest challenge each year isn't finding the fish—it's coordinating schedules so their children and grandchildren can all be together. Those moments shared on the water have become treasured family traditions, teaching each generation that the experience is about far more than the size of the catch.

"The memories are what matter most," Betty says. "Enjoy the process of fishing, not just the catch."

Those experiences have also reinforced the importance of conservation. Every fishing license purchased helps support healthy fish and wildlife populations while funding biologists, public access, boat ramps, and conservation programs that make outdoor recreation possible for future generations.

Betty and Wally have spent much of their lives giving back to those causes. Both served for many years as board members of Nebraska Wildlife Crimestoppers, working alongside the Nebraska Game and Parks to protect the state's wildlife and uphold conservation laws. As Lifetime Members of the Platte River Chapter SCI, they continue to support responsible wildlife management, conservation, and the protection of our hunting and fishing heritage.

For the Allison family, the greatest reward isn't measured in inches or trophies. It's found in early mornings on the lake, laughter shared across generations, and the opportunity to pass a love of the outdoors on to those who will carry the tradition forward.
